Asscher-Cut Diamond Engagement Rings To Make You Swoon
This square diamond cut is perfect for a traditional yet unique engagement ring.
Some diamond cuts for natural diamond engagement rings have a vintage, romantic feel, while others look ultra-modern. An Asscher-cut diamond is able to do both. It looks gorgeous in Art Deco-inspired settings, as well as in contemporary styles. Designer Grace Lee loves the versatility of the cut, noting, “The Asscher is lovely set with a bezel or prongs.”

This step-cut diamond is similar to an emerald cut. Both have cropped corners and long rectangular facets, but an Asscher cut diamond is always square shaped and its larger cut corners make it almost octagonal. While an emerald cut can also be square, an Asscher cut has a larger more specific faceting pattern that give it a different look. It was created in 1902 by Joseph Asscher, whose name the shape bears.
An Asscher-cut diamond also has more sparkle than an emerald-cut diamond due to the placement of its 58 facets. “Asschers have a beautiful, fiery complexity that has quickly made them one of my favorite cuts to work with,” says London-based jeweler Thelma West.

Thelma West
The Mae ring from Thelma West is striking and highlights the beauty of the Asscher cut diamond. West adores working with Asscher-cut diamonds, saying, “They’re a bold cut. They demand attention and captivate the eye no matter what setting you put them in – from something equally as bold, like our hefty Mae in the Sky with Diamonds setting, to our more subtle SugarCane Solitaire. This versatility makes them very exciting to design around.” Here she used warm 18K rose gold and rich brown ceramic.
Briony Raymond
New York-based designer Briony Raymond highlights the diamond’s octagonal shape by surrounding a 7-carat Asscher-cut diamond with a ring of baguette diamonds. Both are delicately set inside yellow gold bezels, which adds a modern look to the Regent ring. It is sure to make quite a statement.
De Beers
The prominent prongs on this ring from De Beers hide the cropped corners of an Asscher-cut diamond, making it the perfect choice for someone who wants a step-cut diamond but prefers a square shape. The DB Classic ring features a 1-carat diamond but comes in different sizes, too.
KatKim
KatKim is known for its unique engagement rings, which non-traditional brides adore. The Cosma ring features a 1.5-carat Asscher-cut diamond in an intricate design. It sits within an x-shaped yellow gold band split by a row of pavé diamonds. Despite the unique design, the diamond is still prominent and takes center stage.
Brent Neale
This chunky bezel-set Asscher-cut diamond ring from designer Brent Neale could be an engagement ring for a non-traditional bride, as well as a fun right-hand ring. The warm 18K yellow gold setting contrasts with the glittering white diamond.
Grace Lee
Grace Lee adores the symmetry of an Asscher-cut diamond, which make it “both a modern and classic cut,” she says. “The Asscher cut has always been my favorite diamond cut. The linear cutting of Asscher Cuts is almost hypnotizing.” In this ring, she accents a 1.5-carat Asscher-cut diamond with two trapezoid diamonds. This geometric combination is ultra-modern.
Kwiat
Kwiat turns the Asscher cut on its side, literally, in this pretty ring. By rotating the stone, it takes on a completely different look, looking like a diamond shape instead of a square. Delicate, claw-shaped yellow gold prongs secure the diamond and add a further unexpected element to the design. The final effect is traditional with a subtle twist.
Lauren Addison
It’s not just white diamonds that shine in the Asscher cut. Lauren Addison uses a stunning 3.40-carat fancy intense yellow diamond in this beautiful ring. She flanks the colored diamond with white trillion-cut diamonds, using mixed metal prongs to match the diamonds’ hues.
Lugano Diamonds
This significant ring from Lugano Diamonds features a 5-carat Asscher-cut diamond at its center, and the band is set with an additional 2.9 carats of emerald-cut diamonds instead of the usual pavé diamonds. The combination of these two step-cut diamonds is stunning.
Having these larger diamonds along the band ensures the ring sparkles from every angle, and you’ll always see gorgeous diamonds.
Nikos Koulis
Heads will turn to the bride who sports this contemporary ring from Nikos Koulis. The Oui ring features a significant Asscher-cut diamond at the center, with tapered baguette diamonds alongside it. The ring has an unusual open design, and the sides are topped with black enamel. The contrast between black enamel and sparkling white diamonds is gorgeous.
Jemma Wynne
Jemma Wynne showcases the beauty of bezel settings in the Autumn ring. It features a 3-carat Asscher-cut diamond as the central stone flanked by shield-shaped diamonds. All three stones are set in white gold settings, which appear less prominent than yellow gold. It might even make the diamonds look a little bigger. The design is a chic, updated take on a three-stone ring.
